Q.  What is a mentor?

A.  A mentor is a teacher, a guide, a sage, a coach.  A wise and trusted advisor.

  • A mentor gently guides and nurtures the growth of others
  • A mentor is a catalyst for change
  • A mentor is a learner as well as a teacher
  • A mentor forms a partnership with another person

The First Mentor

The term mentor comes originated in classical Greek mythology - The Odyssey by homer.  Mentor, a wise teacher and friend, was asked by Odysseus to watch over his one and only son, Telemachus, while he was off to fight the Trojan Was.  Mentor was to coach Telemachus on how to be "king" while Odysseus was gone - as a surrogate parent. Mentor, wise and sensitive, gave his support, protection, guidance and love to this young child left in his care.

We have come to know mentors as those who can guide and nurture personal growth of others.  They do so by creating a safe context for growth, while sharing their wisdom and experience, and their love of learning.  They are helpers who take pleasure in the success of the people they serve.
